Start 9 months before funding application deadline and complete by 6 months before funding application deadline

Preliminary data may be needed for research planning (power calculations etc.) and to support funding applications. It may come from pilot work or be extracted from existing data sources, possibly as part of a systematic review.

Either pilot data acquisition or systematic review/evidence synthesis may need separate funding.

For example, data extracted from the National Neonatal Research Database can be used to identify disease prevalence to complete power calculations.
